Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

"Do one thing every day that scares you." — Eleanor Roosevelt

Years ago, I registered for a workshop in Los Angeles and spent weeks trying to talk myself out of going. Every fear and limitation I own campaigned for me to stay home. I went anyway and had a fabulous time. During that stretched-thin weekend, I learned I cannot think my way out of fear. It is an irrational force. I must leap with my heart racing again and again until I carve out a new comfort zone. I have learned to live with the invisible thing inside me that wants to shield me from the unknown.
That experience spurred me to write a children's book, Molly McSholly Conquers Kindergarten—about a spunky girl afraid to go to school. Kindergarten is our first real step into the unknown. Molly brings her Knight in Shining Armor to protect herself until she feels comfortable enough to join in.
As a realtor, I help people step out of their comfort zones every day. I sit across the table from clients whose sense of belonging and security lives inside four walls and ask them to walk away from it toward something better, even though it does not feel safe yet. Every workshop, every closing, every first day of school: the door opens, we are terrified, and we grow into the person waiting on the other side. What once felt unknown and frightening quietly becomes the new normal until the next door opens. We do it again and again until we have built a new home within us.
